Fundamentals of Woodworking

Start with a drawing. Leave with a toolbox.

In Fundamentals, every student builds a Japanese toolbox and a set of Krenov-style sawhorses. The lumber is ready and waiting for you, and you walk away with the tools of your next project, built by your own hands.

In their own words

From our students.

We welcome woodworkers of any skill level and any background. Here's what students tell us after their time at the bench.

I took an introductory class in Marquetry followed by a Hand Plane class and I was hooked. The instructors were engaging and really interested in our learning experience. I’ve made several friends that tracked through the same classes with me.

This is a GREAT place to start for someone who has little to no exp or is just interested in picking up a new hobby.
Daryan R., Fundamentals of Woodworking
Ten years ago you had to travel to the east coast to find this level of professional instruction. Kudos to the staff of ASF for creating this opportunity for woodworkers.

How it started

It began in a grandfather’s woodshop in Kansas.

Our founder, Austin Waldo, got his passion for woodworking by hanging around that shop growing up. In 2017 he saw how much Austin wanted more woodworking education, and set out to find the best furniture makers to plan, open and run a school. A core group of makers came together, and the Austin School of Furniture was born.
